I cannot disagree with your brief commentary. No doubt, those State Troops were under-utilized, misused by bureaucratic, malfeasant losers.

My thoughts are that we cannot judge these men, not the individuals who enlisted in the State Troops anyway. During this time period Mississippi was being ravaged by War and the South was on the losing end. I have never been in combat and I never had yankee storm troopers beating down the doors of my house. I recall a passage in "To Die in Chicago: Camp Douglas 1862-65", where the commandant of the initial camp of Ft. Donelson prisoners remarked that men from other states would accept the offer to take the Oath once in awhile, but soldiers from Mississipi and Texas declined, stating they would prefer to fight it out.
