I have two ancestors that were captured by Union forces. One went to Rock Island, Illinois, the other to Camp Morton, Indiana. Neither survived their first month. One suffered on the train from Tennessee to Rock Island, in the dead of winter, with no heat, no winter clothing, stuffed into box cars; he died the first week. Camp Morton was known for brutal treatment of its prisoners. So no, Camp Douglas was not "the exception"
