I believe, according to the O.R., that I can only give you a partial amount. The total is probably unknown, the system was so corrupt, and many Union officers got rich from the system, especially the bounties paid for the enlistment and conscription of slaves to their owners in the slave states.

The amount is said to have been $37,500,000, but it was probably about 1/3 higher than that by my guess.
