J. H. Black, a Private of Captain James A. Poe's Company A, Gause's Regt. 3 Brigade Prices
Division Trans-Miss Infantry, Age 15 years 5 feet 3 Inches high, dark complexion, gray eyes
black Hair and by occupation a school boy, born in the state of Tenn was inlisted by Captain
Hicks at Camp Hope Ark on the first day of October eighteen hundred and sixty two to serve
for the period of three years or during the war has this day substituted in his stead Thomas
Courtney age forty eight years five feet nine inches high dark complexion black eyes black
hair born in England to serve out the period for which he was inlisted said Thomas Courntney
has been carefully examined by the Regimental Surgeon and find him able to perform the
duties of a soldier

Given under my hand at Camp
Near Little Rock this first day of May 1863

I hereby certify that I have carefully examined said Thomas Courney substituted in the stead
of James H. Black a private of Captain James A. Poe's [Company] (A) and find him
capable of performing the duties of a soldier.
