I'm sure you were wonderful at talking to them Herb. Right now, in this time, we have young people who have a more open mind maybe because it's been enough generations past the constant barrage of race related negative news or maybe it's just because they haven't heard much on the Civil War other than it was "good vs evil" type tripe. It's the time of year when I do my talk to 4th graders on Florida History and I always get info on the CW in it. They ask some really well thought out questions too. One of the teachers I do this for is from Maine and she is very interested in it too. She said she hadn't really learned much except the general textbook lessons and even she said she knows who wrote those textbooks. A couple of kids got hung up on my growing up without air conditioning and us not having a tv til I was around 10. They think that was pretty sad. I told them we had to use our brains to come up with things to do and it went right over their little Video Game Playing heads.

If you do get the chance to talk with them more, they won't forget what you say because 'in person' makes it more personal.
