Herb, have you considered contacting the Special Collections Depts of your state Universities, describing what you have and inquiring as to what interests they may have concerning your life's work. With those interests in mind, you could then organize your files, toss that which is not of apparent value and consider donating the balance to one of your universities. Same thought applies to any of your public libraries that happen to have a good genealogy/history room, holdings and clerks dedicated to maintaining such records.

That's what I am doing, with the exception of some of my own family files which, like you, I plan to give to the one child out of all of ours who has an expressed interest in those papers and computer records. That donation will occur long before I croak, so I might help her interpret what she has received.
