The Flag bearer was often the main target (most obvious) in Civil War battles. Look at the records and see how many men who carried the flag were shot compared to those who didn't carry the flag (look at it from a percentage point of view). I have read accounts of a battle in which the flag bearer was shot. A soldier nearby dropped his gun, grabbed the flag and marched onward. This was repeated 4 times. Capturing the enemy's flag would be even more impressive...you were then IN the enemy's ranks during the fight. We forget that the battles were usually fought in two "lines" marching towards each other. Capturing/retrieving the flag would have been more impressive than dragging a wounded comrade back from the battle front.
So not such a wimpy medal of honor for THAT action.
