Miss Peggy welcome to News and Views. I certainly did not intend to imply that teachers do not teach historical facts to their students, I am positive that when the history text includes various wars in which the United States has engaged including the War Between the States that the facts offered are diligently taught to the students.

I was expressing statements made by those in the youth group to whom I spoke. I have seen one of the history text which my Granddaughter, who is 16, brings home and there is very little to no space devoted in particular to the Civil War. The fact that history concerning the Civil War is many times excluded from text books and when it is included the text states that the war was fought to free the slaves which is absolutely untrue.

In my opinion, the individual school principles, teachers, and even local school boards have basically no say in deciding what text books to use for educating their students.

If I understand what I read, the Texas education system pretty much determines what school texts will be used by the balance of the United States since they purchase more text books than any other state. Due to the large number of books required by the Texas system, text book publishers hesitate to make the investment required to print separate text books for individual state systems.
