Southern Slavery Economics - A New Twist
In Response To: Re: Southern Slavery Economics ()

Regarding Black customers at local general stores after the war,
does anyone know of an instance in Mississippi to support that Black
sharecroppers were able to buy on credit in the same way as white
farmers with payment made when their crop was harvested?

Of course, this implies that the value of their crops was greater than
the debt owed to the storekeeper, which I understand was not always
the case - which perpetuated an ongoing state of indebtedness on the
part of Black sharecroppers.

If anyone has any Mississippi data on this, I sure would like to hear
from you.
