The U.S. Army Regulations of 1861/1863 allow for the employment of "African Under Cooks" at the salary of $10 per month. Also, officers were allow pay and rations for the employment of servants. There are numerous references in diaries and letters, as well as photographic evidence, of blacks being employed by the United States Army as servants, laborers, etc... These all appear to be civilian employees and thus would not be eligible for a pension.
