No one knows the author of this two volume diary but he was with the 9th Massachusetts. The diary was found in the attic of a Wisconsin home. I wonder if this black man got a pension. Thought you might enjoy the humor.

6/20 A contraband in the service of Captain O’Leary of our regiment took a notion to have a little battery of his own this afternoon. He procured a glass bottle and filled it with powder, and putting his artillery in position, touched it off with a lighted match, causing an explosion that tore the captain’s tent and cut the darkey’s head and brought the captain’s number ten’s in collision with the seat of his (the darkey’s) pantaloons. We had infantry skirmishing along the whole line today, in addition to a lively artillery engagement.
