Re: I agree!

You've made a very good point Chuck. Compared to many other nations, the United States is just a toddler. Even keeping that in mind one has to understand the huge number of events that took place in the 1890's to today could be a couple of years worth of textbooks and even then many things would be either left out or glossed over. Instead of cramming the entire history of the US in one year maybe stretching it out to two or even three years would be better so all of the important events are covered. As it stands now, the founding days are just one short chapter. I remember spending a long time on the Revolutionary War era but so much has happened in even our/my lifetime it has to be a condensed version. How can we ever expect our young to respect the gift they have been given and how can they possibly understand the responsibility that will pass on to them to hold it intact even if they have to fight for it? Maybe US History should be taught as one year from the events leading to the Revolutionary War and on to maybe 1900. Then another year could be from 1900 to the present. Without a clear understanding of what we are as a nation and how we got here, there will be little loyalty to the founders in the near future. We've too many walking around believing Ben Franklin was a President. If they aren't understanding why that is a wrong idea, how can we ever expect them to understand the Civil War and the impact it has made long after the last shot was fired?
