The patrionizing speeches are astounding, especially the words that were authorized by the UDC. I suppose they would characterize them as "reconciliation". The important thing is the monument itself, well made with inscriptions that honor our Confederate ancestors.

It is very ironic that G.W. Bush resurrected a policy of placing a wreath on the Confederate Memorial on Memorial Day. Ironic, because while Governor of Texas, he condoned the cowardly removal of the two Confederate plaques (in the middle of the night) from the Texas Supreme Court building to appease some racists. A building that was paid for entirely with Confederate Widows' Pension funds and the placques were installed to honor Gen. Robert E. Lee and the Texans that fought in the War. George had no Confederate ancestors, but he knows how to win at politics.
