Re: Physical and Mental Health Costs...

Ok, that makes sense. I was wondering how they could have any real records of the Confederate Vets if the States handled the pensions and other aspects. It would be a real eye opener if they were able to study both. I'd guess the 'stress' levels of the Confederates were much higher. For the most part, those in the Union Army were able to return home to resume life where they left off. There would have been some major adjustments for those who lost limbs or had other deformative injuries and for their families as well. On the other hand, the Confederate Veteran returned to a world upside down. It's hard to imagine. From the family stories I've heard on one GGGrand, the one at Ft Deleware, he was pretty good natured but when one of his brothers was killed, he went after the killer, took care of business and tossed the gun from the train on the way back home. I've not been able to prove any of that but it does make a good story. When he died though, he was possibly delerious and was screaming "The Yanks have got my toes!!!". He died in 1922.
Another GGGrand had one arm when he returned to Alabama then they found they had no land and they packed up and wagoned it down here. So many had to readjust their lives because their homes and land just wasn't the same or even theirs anymore. Truth be told, they found they had no rights either.
It would also be interesting if there were stats on the wives of the Confederate Vets. Just the journals and diaries I've read were compelling, but that's only a small number of them.
