During and after WWII PTSD was called shell shock. There have been lots of other names, like combat fatigue. My father served on a destroyer in the Pacific and he had shell shock. We learned not to bring balloons or cap guns around him and if someone let the wind slam a door shut...it was best not to be around Dad.
