Lee takes command
On this date, June 1st, in 1862 General Robert E. Lee, military aide and advisor to President Jefferson Davis was ordered to assume command of the Army of Northern Virginia after the wounding of General Joseph E. Johnston. Lee relieved General G.W. Smith, Johnston's second in command, after a lackluster one day in Command directing the second days battle of Seven Pines/Fair Oaks.
