Re: Real Granddaughter

Herb, good question that deserves as answer. May I submit my theory?

When the Sons of Confederate Veterans were formed in 1896 United Confederate Veterans Commander in Chief gave the following order to our organization...

"To you, Sons of Confederate Veterans, we will commit the vindication of the cause for which we fought. To your strength will be given the defense of the Confederate soldier's good name, the guardianship of his history, the emulation of his virtues, the perpetuation of those principles which he loved and which you love also, and those ideals which made him glorious and which you also cherish."

If I recall correctly the United Daughters of the Confederacy, who predate the SCV, were also given a charge or were at least recognized by Gen. Lee later during his address. Nobody smart enough to be a General would also be dumb enough to overlook the beautiful Belles of the South. Especially if he didn't like his own cooking and was hoping to get home without pot knots on his noggin'.

Anyway, the SCV officially recognizes actual 1st generation sons of Confederate veterans with the term "Real Son". He is a throw back to the generation the Gen. Lee gave the charge to. NO slight of the ladies is intended.

My two cents worth.
