I think there were quite a few who imbibed a bit for medicinal purposes and their reasons may have been well founded. They didn't have fancy names for 'nerves' back then but I'd think it was common. We read some accounts of things and it makes us cringe. Bless their hearts, they lived it. After every war, there's an Uncle, Brother, someone who may have a tic or need some tonic every once in a while.
My GGGrand Parker played the fiddle. He also (he was a widower then) would go up the road to visit a widow lady. I heard he came home sort of dancin a jig. I also was told that when his youngest brother was killed by some guy in front of a little grocery store way after the war, he found out who it was. The guy was visiting family here but he lived in Tampa. Grand took the train to Tampa. Early in the morning, the man was eating his breakfast. He didn't see Grand climb on his fence and take aim with a rifle. Grand caught the next train back here and somewhere along the way, tossed the rifle while the train was moving. I've never been able to prove that story. After spending time in Ft Deleware, he possibly developed a 'hard' side. Don't know but it could have happened.
