Pam...This saga occurred in Fla. This distant relative was a General in the War of 1812 and was assigned to covertly go into Fla and do some surveying of certain sections of north Fla. He took a few troops and proceeded on his mission. As this time Fla was under the control of the Spanish Governor of Fla, when the Governor got intelligence that U.S. troops were inside his territory he placed a reward on the leader of the invasion. Three days later an Indian (I believe a Seminole or Creek) (from memory) entered the office of the governor and tossed a bloody scalp upon his desk and said I came for my reward. This was identified as the scalp of my relative, the General. The grant consisted of all land which the General had surveyed. I understand that this was one of the largest grants given by the Spanish government in Fla and was located in and around the present day Jacksonville, Fla. As a matter of info, this General served as a private in the American Revolution. Quite an advancement in rank!!!!

This information was gleaned from documents in the National Archives.
