Just imagine living behind enemy lines for three and a half years. That was Middle TN and much of Louisiana. And for Missouri and Kentucky it was the entire war. It was ALWAYS bleak for those Southerners, Confederate or Unionist. You cannot easily compare the experiences and morale of Confederate soldiers or civilians in Texas with those in Kentucky or Virginia. The resolve of Southerners was the same as their grandparents in the American Revolution. Some lost faith earlier, some were "Tories" from the outset, and some fought to the bitter end. It just did not play out well like the first time around.
