Re: Washington vs Lincoln

James,

The only problem I see with the idea of the two (2) parties, state and federal governments, deciding on separation is that in practice, if a vote were taken in congress, the separating state(s) would always or almost always be in the minority. As a "state's righter", I agree with the principle of debate, but the debate I would honor, would be that of the state legislature. This happened and the decision was secession.

Today, the individual states and especially the Mexican border states are being left undefended along our borders by the federal government. In addition, the federal government is making decisions regarding major industries in the state of Texas, that could seriously damage our economy and definitely violates our state sovereignty.

At the point that I can't protect my family or my livelihood because of decisions by the federal government, should Texas go to the federal government and ask if we can go on our own? I believe not.

I am not advocating this action, at this time, but if the federal government fails to live up to its constitutional responsibilities to the states, is it not breaching the contract (The Constitution) and should not the states have the right to take actions to protect and defend the people of the individual states, even to the point of secession?

Jim
