Re: Trying to Get through Shelby Foote

I don't think I ever watched an interview with him that didn't fascinate me. He could explain things so whatever he was talking about made sense. There are times when the written word goes a bit around the corner but when spoken, the words climb the fence and take the shortcut. He said he was a story teller, not a historian. Not sure I agree. He knew more about history than some history professors but that got him out of listing his sources.

I have War Means Fighting, Fighting Means Killing (Pea Ridge to the Seven Days) and Riot and Resurgence (Tullahoma to Meridian) and I've read others but still haven't read all of his works. They surely do not come under the 'light reading' section.
