"The only time I know of where slave owners were compensated with money were those who leased or rented their slaves to the Federal government to do labor such as build forts."

The State of Louisiana compensated slave owners for the loss of slaves who died while working on state projects (such as building forts) during the War. The average compensation seems to have been between $1,800 and $2,200. Owners were also paid for the use of their slaves on these government projects.
