Re: Lincoln Position on Compensated Emancipation

It did end up a huge mess. We should, if we are wise, take a few lessons from that past experience but it looks like we're going to mess up again. The sudden 'freedom' those enjoyed in the beginning of Sherman's trek through Georgia was short lived when they figured out they were being left at the river and on their own. Maybe they couldn't see it in that time but we know that the machine age was catching on in agriculture at a pretty fast pace. Had the slaves been freed and given some incentive to stay as a paid employee or to work at a trade such as brickmason or such, it would have been much kinder to them. As it was, the entire redestruction thing was a trainwreck from the beginning.
