Re: Indian Battles during the Civil War
Stan, it's been several years since we were up that way, but I found it quite fascinating. Also, about 50 miles west of town is the famous Independence Rock and Devil's Gate. That country is incredibly foreboding for most of the year. There's a rest stop at Ind Rock, and I crawled all over that thing for about 2 hours trying to find my own rels names on the thing. They passed through there in Summer 1846 and made it over the Sierra Cliffs just a few weeks ahead of the Donners. Many of the party they were in (Elam Brown-Isaac Allen co-capts) died of typhoid fever along the way. My g-g-gf, Isaac Allen, who left a widow and 11 kids, is buried under Interstate 80 coming up the grade from Reno to Tahoe. I always try to be sensitive to any unusual speed bumps that might indicate where he might be. But alas, the highway engineers were too efficient!
