I got more bio info on Colonel Gardner, the commander of the Fort Moultrie garrison before Anderson. John Lane Gardner.

1852.

Brvet. Col. Jno L. Gardner late Major of the 4th has joined the 1st Artillery Head Quarters at Pensecola as Lt. Colonel by commission vice Lt. Col. Whiting diseased.

Gardner, born in Boston and a veteran of the War of 1812, had been assigned to Washington, in the office of the Quartermaster General in 1818. He returned to regimental duty in 1830, served in the Seminole and Mexican Wars (4th US Artillery), and attained rank as major in 1845, Lt. Col. in 1852, and Colonel in 1861.
