Re: Help save Gettysburg Battlefield.

I am still torn between the two. Land is land and Wal-marts and Casinos can be torn down, for example the 400 foot high observation tower build in the middle of the Battlefield at Gettysburg not too many years ago and the "git and go" at Franklin, Tenn.

Still I understand the desire to fight such intrusions at the start. Because it is so hard to correct them later. But such things can be corrected. This whole this is about money. The National Parks get their funding because of visitors. They lose thier visitors and they will eventually have their funding cut. They then will have to do something to attract back the visitors then maybe they will correct their interpretation. The town make their money off of the visitors also. These town people don't care about the "History" except that it makes them money. They are not as idealistic as we who fight to preserve that history, It makes no difference whether it is a battlefield or a Casino if it makes the town money. Our forefathers didn't fight and die to make those people rich. If people have no more respect than that let the battlefields go. We will have new ones in the future to dedicate.

And speaking of Preservation which is better for our children to hear? A bad history that is taught to protect a political agenda? Or no history at all? Personally I would prefer no History to a bad history, because when later you can teach a correct history you will be dealing with a blank slate rather than a mind that has been polluted.

In my opinion the National Parks Service have successfully destroyed the useful purpose of maintaining the Battlefield. And that is to teach us how not to repeat the same mistakes again. Teaching that the War was over slavery will not keep us from having another internal conflict that will tear this nation apart.
