George, I gathered from the story, since the family was present, that they knew who he was, it was just that he was misidentified as a Confederate. That's what I would wonder about. Why the original confusion. Since he was a former slave, it should have been known which side he was on, and he didn't die until 1929. Didn't he ever say who he fought for? Maybe he WAS a reb, but his family didn't, or didn't want to, believe it. More digging into the facts might resolve the questions. Stan
