Re: 150 Years ago Today- Riot in St. Louis

Hey David, do you remember where Millview was when you were here? It was that area sort of west on Lillian Hwy across Blue Angel where Lillian Hwy ran along Perdido Bay for a little bit. People think all of those post sticking up out of the water (and they are very visible at low tide) were the remains of old docks but they were pilings the sawmills were built on. Any way--- there's a story I've heard a number of times and I did read an account of it somewhere many years ago and I cannot find anything on it now. Before and during the CW it was just a small community of farmers and there were a few places of business. A general store, blacksmith and such. The mills came in after the war. It was actually bigger than Myrtle Grove and the post office was there and it was the enumeration district for the census. At some time during the CW, there were 2 or 3 Confederats soldiers who were either related to someone there or just ended up there needing shelter and some food. Some one told the Union soldiers they were there and there was a raid made on a few of the homes. They Union men found one of the Confederates and shot him. It's said he's buried in the little cemetery there on Lillian across from the bay. The Union men also made the people in the houses get out and even an old man who was crippled from a stroke or something. His daughters begged them to let him be but they just dragged him outside anyway. They then set fire to the houses.

This story has been around way longer than I have and I cannot find any reference to it anywhere. There was a written account and I have read it but it was so very long ago I have no idea where or what publication it was in. That's another one of those instances of the Union being too intrusive and using bad manners. I'm going to check the OR's and see if there was a report on that but I doubt there was.
