Lincoln Laments Lacadaisical Leaders,
Since the beginning of the war, the great frustration of Lincoln had been to find generals not only to win battles, but willing to fight at all. He found one in Grant. Lincoly wrote Grant today that his plan to follow the enemy "to the death" would not "be done" unless you watch it every day and force it.
