Re: Lincoln's Springfield Speech

Lincoln's seclusion was tradition. In the 19th century, once they secured their party's nomination, the presidential candidate generally avoided making public speeches and active public campaigning, leaving that to others in the party. I'm not sure when candidates began actively campaigning, but it must have at least been by the early 20th century since TR was shot by an assassin while campaigning for president on the Bull Moose ticket in 1912.
