For a while there, after the war, we had one of the biggest lumber industries in the world. They just didn't think to replant that old heart pine after they cleaned it out. We still have a turpentine mill. I like knowing that the wood from the old Live Oaks on the campus at my high school is used when they do repairs on the USS Constitution. They had to take a few out for an expansion and the only way they could get permitted was if the wood went to a preservation project. There's a bit of old Rebel in that big beautiful ship. Like it or not. :)
Y'all convinced me it was the right thing to do but when I learned of the Confederates burning all of the mills before they ran out of the area it really saddened me. Now they're mining the logs in the river from that time and getting big bucks for them.
