That's strange. The article said the largest number of men being sent would be from France, yet less than 100 years later France couldn't defend itself and hasn't since. Though truth be told, I'm not sure any country the size of France could defend itself against the German war machine then. Seems the Germans have always been pretty good at fighting. The times they came over here to assist they sure weren't shy about battle. For helping during the Revolutionary War, it was a good thing. For helping during the Civil War, it was bad for ancestors.
Wonder if our modern day leaders have taken some notes on things from this era? Just take over and split up a country because you can. An early European Union? They wanted Turkey to operate with "humanity and toleration" but I guess they didn't think the reasons the Union was fighting the Confederacy was for humanity and toleration. Hmmm???? I guess there was a lot more going on in the world and they weren't paying that much attention to our potential troubles.
