Just my point of view, But our hypesensitivities of todays society were not the case in the 1800's. Theirs was a time of "matter of fact" type of reporting of exactly what happened. They didn't tiptoe around the tulips like we do today. people were "bald" not "folically deprieved". they were "fat" not "plesently plump", they were "short" and not "altitude imparted". In short they were blunt in their statements as a general rule. He didn't "severely beat the women" he "beat her brains out".
