If he was in Baldwin County, I'd bet ya a dollar he knew at least one of my kin. That seems to have been the football, baseball, NASCAR, golf of their time. I suppose it's because they could listen to them on the radio and felt more 'connected' than they would just seeing an account in print. The fights were on the front page then too. No Sports section. I can understand why this one line of my kin liked them, they fought all the time, strangers, cops, each other, didn't matter. I think they liked to spar for the fun of it.

Reading a newspaper for the 'War' news from overseas and later from the front lines here is a whole lot different than what we get on the evening news now. Sometimes it may be better if we don't 'see' it right away.
