Also, Southern political prisoners were kept there. A Mrs. LaRue and a Eugenia Levy Phillips were taken from their homes in New Orleans and imprisoned on Ship Island. There offense? Talking freely about her feelings towards Federal soldiers. Mrs. Phillips' (a jew) husband Philip Phillips would later be a famous and successful lawyer defending Southerners before the Supreme Court.
