Here is a thought. Ending slavery, a humanitarian act to be sure, was not a overall concern of most in free states, not enough to go to war over; however, ending slavery to cause the amount of production of crops in the South (the North's economic rival) to drop and increase the Southern demand of Northern produced pork, corn and wheat was a concern, and I'll even say- probably enough to go to war over.
