What we are seeing is these articles are views not normally associated with Southerners towards fellow Southerners. The Breckinridge Democrats are being accused of throwing the election for the cause of secession...and only secession. Their not being accused of trying to save slavery...their being accused of working with the abolitionist to break-up the Union for their own personal gains.

These ideas follow what I have been formulating in my own mind. That seceding from a government built on protecting the freedom to own slaves was the worst avenue to take if slave owners wanted to protect slavery. It sounded reasonable, however, the practical application of the slave states seceding into their own government in order to protect their economic institution of keeping people as slaves, surrounded by a hostle nation trying to free slaves doesn't work.
