Steve, I liked all of your posts on this. And Joe, you know I hold you in high regard. Virginia raised the trophy requirements (citations) for smallmouth bass years back because too many were taken and the thought was to preserve the gene pool. Now you don't even have to bring in a fish. You can have an attested description and ideally a photo of the fish to get your citation. They work on length and girth instead of weight. Sorry, but it ain't the same. But I do practice "catch and release". And I'd have to say the same for gators. The smart ones will never be caught. Therefore the gene pool will prevail. And a closing note...the number of "points" on a buck's rack have little to do with age. It's diet, competition, and environment. I've seen way too many nice "little" 8 pointers to think that they got that rack from age. Shooting and eating them for over 30 years.
