I think the effects of the Nat Turner Rebellion seem to be underestimated or overshadowed by John Brown's terrorism. Of course the Brown raid was more recent, but the notion of a slave insurrection led by abolitionists must have made the threat a lot more real, more insidious and more likely. Over 50 people were murdered by Nat Turner's gang. Brown killed a lot more people in Kansas than in Virginia.
