The latest issue of the History Channel Magazine reports a slave uprising on September 9, 1739. Twenty slaves stole guns and ammo from a store twenty miles south of "Charles Town" S.C. Chanting "Liberty" they attacked and burned plantations, killing nearly two dozen people, heading south toward Florida. The Spanish governor there had promised them freedom. The slaves gathered recruits as they went, totaling around a hundred. Rum and celebrating slowed them down, giving the militia time to catch up with them, open fire, and kill about half of them. The rest were hunted down and hanged. This rebellion resulted in stricter slave codes,, according to the one paragraph article.
