I am going to try to get out to UWF this week and go through some of the local newspapers in the archives there to see if there were reports of insurrection and some of the other things that are being reported on like in the New Orleans paper. It sure would be helpful to see how the mindset of this locality worked if there's anything in the papers. I've not quite gotten past the fact that they just gave up the town. I get the logistics and all but I'm not convinced. The older family type of records in the archives that I have accessed are sort of giving the idea that many of the long time locals were just not all that into the war because they felt we had been in some war or other every few years. They got to the point where they waited for the dust to settle to see what flag was flying that day. Could have been Spain, England, France, Confederate or the Unions. Didn't matter. They were just sort of used to it. Those who cared took the local government to Greenville, Alabama for the duration of the war.
