Thanks Alan. According to a relative's memoirs written in 1902 the deserters preyed on women and children whose men were gone to war. They would take guns, ammunition and anything else they needed. My gggguncle Hope Mizell, who was a member of the Dale Co Home Guard was shot by a deserter. When the soldiers came home they made the deserters leave the area.
