Countries go to war with other countries they recognize as legitimate all the time. The only reason recognition would have any interest to Southerners revolved around the possibility that Great Britian or France might enter the war as an ally of the Confederacy. IF either country had done so, that possibility existed. Otherwise it's of no consequence that I can see.
