Did Southerners realistically hope to extent slavery to the territories? and to what extent, since geographilly the west was not quite suited to growing cotton, tobacco, etc. It was not an ideal place to extend slavery, especially states along the border of Mexico where slavery was illegal and slaves could escape to. Surely Southerners knew this?? Or was it a matter of principal??
