research help

This doesn't have a direct tie-in to the WBTS, but I'm researching an event from the Reconstruction period, so hopefully that's close enough.

I'm planning a trip to the National Archives to research this incident. I've talked to an archivist there who actually pulled the file I'm interested in and it contains something over 500 pages. Photocopying these would be somewhat expensive. He suggested I photograph them, which I could do at no charge. Has anyone else done this and what are some tips to make it work better/easier? The first question that comes to mind is what is the best way to deal with such a large number of 'pictures'? I'm thinking of downloading periodically to my laptop, but is there a better way?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Feel free to contact me off this board.
