Exactly. It is one of the reasons I have posted at least twice as to why Davis thought the slaves did not need to serve in the army, they were still aiding the war effort. Confederate soldiers and civilians were starving and slaves could grow food. One of my grandfathers makes reference to this fact when in a letter home he tells his wife “ I cannot grow cotton and fight a war too”

I have at least one uncle who has a CSR showing he worked as a rancher for the Confederate government. If I recall correctly he was disabled in battle and retained his soldiers status while raising cattle. At least this what his CSR seems to imply.
