Yes very personal, Alan. I thought I had mentioned his brother but maybe it is mentioned in another post in that tangle bush of posts somewhere below.

Seems like the brother had been wounded and, in the heat of battle, Oates was forced to abandon him, in order to meet his responsibilities as leader to his men, it would be an impossible choice, and an emotional burden, and so hard to ever let those feelings go,
