Re: Arming the Slaves (PS)
In Response To: Re: Arming the Slaves (PS) ()

I did not ask for more slaves to be freed. CSA generals did. They said we need to free more slaves or we will lose. I did not think that was even controversial.

The CSA did not free more slaves in the numbers the generals said they thought were necessary or the top most respected general certainly would not still have been asking again in 1865. I did not think that was controversial in any manner.

Only in February 1865 did the political leadership of the CSA begin to address the issue, and by that time it was far far too late. I did not think anyone seriously disputed that.

I am completely amazed that the statements above are in any way controntroversial. And completely baffled by the hostility my questions received from some, and how they have been totally misunderstood by some, and clearly fully understood by others, all folks of above average intelligence.

My starting point was: these Southern generals themselves said, "we will surely lose if we don't do this." Facts prove, it wasn't done in a timely manner, and the South lost. Were the generals right? Were the requests of the generals trivial and unneccesary, or were they crucial and necessary? And if the things they proposed and requested were already in practice why did they waste the effort in asking? Was there really a need for more freed slaves in the lines or not?

My starting point was: did the CSA generals who made these suggestions and requests and proposals have it right or did the CSA policy makers who put off for years acting on them have have it right? Was the legislation truly not needed until February 1865? When was the best time to act, if at all? Were the requests of the politicians by the generals something that was needed to be legislated, or were they not needed to be made policy?

There is nothing about morallity, or God, or hymns, or supposed Union moral superiority anywhere in these questions whatsoever. The USA doesn't even figure into the questions in any manner.

They can be discussed based on their merits alone.
