"Remember the 1st, 2rd, and 3rd Louisiana Native Guard? They were first Confederate as Louisiana home guard with their own officers before Ben Butler made them Union soldier with white officers."
When the Louisiana Native Guard was reorganized for U.S service by Butler, its line officers and some of the staff were black. The most well known was Andre Cailloux, a free black former slave, who died leading his company at Port Hudson.
